I've been watching these two shows (30 Rock with Tina Faye and Studio 60 on the sunset strip from the guy who did West Wing).
They both take place in a comedy studio . One West coast one East. Apparantly 30 rock was a response from the SNL team when they heard Aaron Sorkin was doing a behind-the-scenes-of-a-comedy show.
There are major differences. There is obviously more money behind studio 60, which might be to it's detriment. Studio 60 has a hard time figuring out what kinda show it is. Often it flirts with drama. This drama is sometimes in the form of heavy, forced dialogue with the sole purpose of being heavy, dramatic dialogue about some topical issue like Iraq or Right vs Left sentimentality. You can smell the producers when you watch this show.
30 rock is much cheaper then Studio 60. The pilot was it's weakest episode to date, which may have turned some people off. It's major difference to Studio 60 is that it wasn't made by the west-wing guy. It's not getting clouded with nonsense drama. It's funny. Not always, but often enough to warrent a show about a comedy show.
I've enjoyed 30 rock from the get-go and I like every episode I see more then the last.
Studio 60 is on the verge of frustrating me with it's obviousness and it's lack of funny (even when it's supposed to be a funny sketch in the show within the show). Every episode I see I like less and less. This is a show for people who only imagine what a late night comedy show is like, as they never stay up late enough to watch one. Ironically it's comedy is about as lame as SNL. And the show made by the SNL team is funnier then both SNL and Studio 60.
30 rock made me Laugh out loud 3-4 times last night.
Another thing Studio lacks is Tracy Morgan
